My Curlew

This heartwarming book presents stories that began in 1929 with the arrival of the Bowker family in Curlew. Edwin Griffin Bowker Sr. and his wife Gertrude Beck Bowker became proprietors of a general store days before the stock market crash of 1929. With Ed and Gert came the family and stories that form this book.
The book is based on the author’s personal experiences within the extended Bowker Family.
The years in Curlew drew the family together. ...it was magic.
Gold was the attraction that drew people to the Kettle River region. The people who came to Curlew sometimes found gold, but it was not gold that made them rich.
The people of Curlew were resourceful, hardworking individuals who persevered through life’s challenges. They were rich in life itself. Such was the experience of the Bowker family.
Edwin Sr. passed away in 1936, but left a lasting legacy. This book is about the Bowker family through the eyes of a kid who was a part of the family over ninety years ago in a place called Curlew.

From the Heart of an Old Poet

Someone asked, "Why do you write poetry?" To which I replied, "Because the words simply fill my thoughts and I can’t stop myself."
There are times when the words make me laugh, and times when I find tears in my eyes. Most of my poems come from an inner mirth or passion, and some reveal things deep in my soul.

Though I don’t recall the first sense of rhythm in my life, I suspect it became a part of my life in my first home. Each of us encounters poetic prosody as we listen to the heartbeat of our mothers. As I write I am aware that POETRY GIVES A HEARTBEAT TO WORDS!
In this work I have included comments about the poems. I invite you to add your thoughts and make responses as you read through the book.

It Was Always You

It Was Always You is a heartwarming book of poetry about my love for a special woman and the role this love played in defining my life.
The poems in this book range from lifelong relationships to lighthearted moments…from deep gratitude to grief and loss.
Mirth finds its way onto the page here and there, and at times I reveal things that abide in the soul.

Tulips in April: A Collection of Poems

Tulips in April is a collection of poems written through the years. Most of the poems were written out of a sense of joy. They simply emerge from the thought of someone, an event, a scent, a sense . . . an inner thought. Some of the enclosed poetry comes from rhythm set to words. And some are mirth, simply mirth.

Poetry is energy--a palpable sense of energy. It comes out of relationships and my response to relationships with people, the earth and its seasons, passions, a sense of the spirit, wonder, awe, the shadow of pathos, and gratitude for the gift of it all.

This book reveals the interiority of my life. One takes a chance when presenting to the world that which springs from deep within. In that chance it is hoped "Tulips in April" will quietly find its way to souls who recognize the love of a small boy who gave his mother a bouquet of tulips on an April day many-many years ago.
